Objective

The objective of Badugi High/Low Poker is to create the best possible high hand and the best possible low hand, according to Badugi hand rankings. Players aim to win at least one portion of the split pot, ideally both, by forming strong hands in both categories.

Hand Rankings

Badugi hands are ranked differently from traditional poker hands, with separate considerations for high and low hands:

  • Low Badugi Hand: The goal is to have the lowest possible four-card hand with all cards of different suits and ranks. The best low Badugi hand is A-2-3-4 of different suits.

Gameplay

The game involves several rounds of drawing and betting, integrating both high and low hand strategies:

  1. Each player is dealt four cards face down.
  2. First betting round begins, starting with the player to the left of the dealer.
  3. Players can draw up to four new cards, discarding unwanted cards and receiving replacements from the deck.
  4. Second betting round begins.
  5. Players can draw again up to four new cards.
  6. Third betting round begins.
  7. Players can draw one final time, up to four new cards.
  8. Final betting round begins.
  9. Showdown: Remaining players reveal their hands. The pot is split between the player with the best high Badugi hand and the player with the best low Badugi hand.

Strategy Tips

  • Focus on discarding cards that duplicate suits or ranks to improve your chances of forming strong high and low Badugi hands.
  • Observe your opponents’ drawing patterns to gauge the strength of their hands and adjust your strategy accordingly.
  • Balance aggression with caution during betting rounds to manage the size of the pot and gain information about opponents’ hands.
  • Consider the possibility of scooping the entire pot by having the best hand in both the high and low categories.
  • Be aware of the card combinations that work well for both high and low hands to maximize your chances of winning both portions of the pot.
