How to Play: 5-Card Stud
Description:
5 Card Stud Poker is one of the oldest variants of poker, known for its straightforward and strategic gameplay. Unlike other popular poker variants, 5 Card Stud does not include community cards, and players are dealt a mix of face-up and face-down cards throughout the game.
Game Setup
The game is typically played with a standard 52-card deck and can accommodate 2 to 8 players. Each player antes (places a small bet) to begin the hand.
Dealing the Cards
The dealer gives each player one card face down (the hole card) and one card face up. The player with the lowest face-up card must make a forced bet, known as the “bring-in” bet.
Betting Rounds
There are five betting rounds in 5 Card Stud, with cards dealt as follows:
- First Betting Round: Each player receives one face-down card and one face-up card. The player with the lowest face-up card initiates the first round of betting.
- Second Betting Round: Each player receives a second face-up card. Betting starts with the player showing the highest poker hand using their face-up cards.
- Third Betting Round: Each player receives a third face-up card. Betting follows the same format, starting with the highest showing hand.
- Fourth Betting Round: Each player receives a fourth face-up card. Another round of betting ensues.
- Final Betting Round: Each player receives a fifth and final card face down. The last round of betting starts with the player showing the highest face-up hand.
Showdown
After the final betting round, if more than one player remains, there is a showdown. Players reveal their hands, and the best five-card hand wins the pot. Standard poker hand rankings apply.
Hand Rankings
The hand rankings in 5 Card Stud are the same as in traditional poker:
- Royal Flush: A, K, Q, J, 10, all of the same suit.
- Straight Flush: Five consecutive cards of the same suit.
- Four of a Kind: Four cards of the same rank.
- Full House: Three of a kind plus a pair.
- Flush: Five cards of the same suit.
- Straight: Five consecutive cards of different suits.
- Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same rank.
- Two Pair: Two pairs of different ranks.
- One Pair: One pair of the same rank.
- High Card: The highest card if no other hand is made.
